This artwork explores the nuances associated with identity. A mandala, this artwork has three sectors, each repeating once. The first is a tree. It makes us wonder whether identity is a natural phenomenon. That is, is our identity acquired as naturally as a tree bears fruits? The next contains bricks and waves. The former a symbol of both stability and rigidity, and the latter a symbol of movement and change. Together, they make us wonder to what extent is our identity a fixed, as in unchanging, phenomenon and to what extent is change in our identity necessary, important and desirable.
The third sector uses the technique of pointillism. The small dots of colour appear to form a shape, image or pattern when viewed from a distance. This brings to mind the principle of Gestalt theory – ‘the whole is more than the sum of its parts.’ Even though our eyes see the dots, they perceive a shape, which, strictly speaking, does not exist. Translating this thought to our discussion on identity, does it mean that as people, we are more than all of our identities put together?
